Home decorating need not be expensive, nor do you need to be artistic. Just a little time, effort and imagination. That is all you need.

Lighting

Lighting is a major key to decorating your home. You can set the perfect mood for each room with your choice of lighting. Soft subtle lights can give a great soft homely effect. Placing lamps in a couple of strategic places can achieve this. If you change your colour scheme and the lamps you have don't quite match what you have chosen. Use curtain material to recover the lamp shades. Matching the material with you existing curtains is one option or using a contrasting colour would break the pattern of colour in the room. To cover your lamp shade simply glue the material on the frame around the top and bottom. It is a good Idea to glue the top first and let the glue dry properly before pulling the material tightly and gluing the bottom. Pleats in the material will give a wonderful effect with the light. Make sure the material you choose is not lined or the light will be very dull. Colouring the bulbs is another way to get a soft lighting effect. You can get glass paint from most department stores and craft stores. You kids water paints do a great job also. Overhead lights can be given the same treatments. Light store, department stores and craft store generally carry in stock light fittings including frames for shades. So changing your overhead shades can be relatively cheap. Cheap glass shades can be dressed up with a little glass paint also. Painting a design on glass can be easily achieved. Use carbon paper and a pencil and trace a design from a photo or magazine cutting or even a wallpaper sample. Anything you wish. Then fill in the design left from the carbon with the paint. For a stained glass effect you can purchase a tube of fake lead at your nearest craft store. Using the fake lead straight from the tube trace around the lines of your design, then simply fill in with the glass paint. Easy relatively cheap and very effective.
